How Tiny Singapore Became a Petro-Giant - by Jon Y
February 10, 2023 - The world economy went into recession, creating an oil glut, and people questioned the wisdom of building a massive petrochemical complex during these difficult times. Analysts predicted hundred million dollar annual losses for the complex. Regardless, the $2 billion SGD complex was finished in 1984. The complex consisted of a naphtha cracker and a few downstream plants on the island of Ayer Merbau. Naphtha is a major product of Singapore's refineries, and can be eventually turned into plastics, polymers and such.

Petroleum refining in Singapore — Singapore Industry Index
Singapore is one of the world's top three oil-refining centres, with roughly 1.5 million barrels a day of crude capacity concentrated on and around Jurong Island, feeding the region with transport fuels, base oils, bitumen and petrochemical feedstock and anchoring Asia's largest physical oil-trading and bunkering hub. The buyer's lens on a refinery is scale (barrels per day), configuration and complexity (simple hydroskimming versus deep-conversion with crackers and hydroprocessing), integration with downstream petrochemicals and lubricants, and increasingly its decarbonisation and feedstock-flexibility trajectory. The sector sits at roughly 22–23% of Singapore's manufacturing output, and the refineries are the tonnage core of it.

April 1, 2026 - Singapore's economic officials have also told market intelligence group S&P Global Energy the country's refineries are maintaining stable operations and drawing on diverse supplies of crude oil as war between the United States, Israel and Iran disrupts trade. Singapore, once nicknamed the "Houston of Asia", has made itself an oil hub by capitalising on its geographic location. It used its place along major trade routes between the Middle East and Asia to attract oil companies to its shores, building one of the world's largest oil trading and refining hubs, capable of processing 1.5 million barrels of crude a day.
