Effect of dimethylsulfoxide as a masking agent for aqueous chlorine in the determination of oxychlorines - Analyst (RSC Publishing)
January 1, 1995 - The aim of this work was to demonstrate that dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is an excellent masking agent for aqueous chlorine in the determination of other oxychlorines. By the addition of excess DMSO, specific absorbance of free chlorine disappeared, and the oxidation of iodide to iodine by chlorine ...

Also, many flavorants contain reactive alkenes such as d-limonene that can degrade the chlorine. Additionally when d-limonene is oxidized by some oxidants, the resultant derivatives produced can be undesirable as a possible sensitizer. the example masking agents used herein can mask the taste and odor of chlorine in the treated drinking water while preserving the effects of the disinfecting agent, such as chlorine.

Under increased pressure or at temperatures below -30ºF, it is a clear, amber-colored liquid. It is generally shipped in steel cylinders as a compressed liquid. Chlorine is only slightly soluble in water, but on contact with moisture it forms hypochlorous acid (HClO) and hydrochloric acid ...

Chlorine-releasing compounds - Wikipedia
July 20, 2026 - This chlorine-releasing compound is the most common bleaching and disinfection compound. A dilute (3–6%) aqueous solution in water, historically known as Eau de Labarraque or "Labarraque's water", is widely marketed as a household cleaning product, under the name "liquid bleach" or simply "bleach". More concentrated solutions are used to disinfect drinking water and as bleaching agents ...

Best Respirator Cartridge for Chlorine (2026 Guide) — WC Safety
July 28, 2026 - Replace cartridges immediately if you ever detect chlorine odor, taste, or throat/eye irritation through the respirator. Key limits to design your program around: OSHA PEL 1 ppm ceiling, NIOSH REL 0.5 ppm (15-min ceiling), IDLH 10 ppm. Half-mask APR = assigned protection factor 10; full-face APR = 50.

Influence of Overlooked Chlorinating Agents on the Kinetics of Organic Compound Halogenation
October 19, 2017 - Moreover, TMB was as effective as sodium thiosulfate when used as a quencher in kinetic experiments involving the chlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol and bromination of anisole. By quantifying TMB and its halogenated products in the quenched samples, we were also able to determine the concentrations of free halogens that were present at the time of quenching. Findings from our work show that TMB can serve as an effective quencher in aqueous halogenation experiments that involve redox-labile analytes and/or that require selective quantification of residual free halogens.

r/ChemicalEngineering on Reddit: Question about using pool chlorine and respiratory protection
August 29, 2020 -
My landlord wants me to use pool chlorine mixed with water to spray down a rental unit and scrub and clean a large section of algae. He purchased this mask https://www.amazon.com/HAOX-Respirator-Organic-Chemical-Woodworking/dp/B085WY7VTY/ref=mp_s_a_1_42?dchild=1&qid=1598729947&s=hi&sr=1-42 On Amazon and says that should be sufficient protection from the fumes. Is a 40 dollar mask all you really need to protect yourself from such a hazardous chemical or am I going to regret not trusting my gut instinct on this ?

A full face mask is sufficient but you need to get an acid/organic vapor cartridge. The brand is questionable though. Anyway, if you already have it just make sure it fits properly. Make sure you don't have facial hair, put on the mask without the cartridge, cover the holes where the cartridge are supposed to go and try to inhale, if you're able to inhale with the holes covered you have a leak and that is not a good fit, or check the manual to see if you put it properly and try again. You can also cover the exhalation port/hole, pressure should build up in the mask, if it doesn't then you have a leak. If it passes the above tests and you have the proper cartridge then you're good. Once you smell chlorine while wearing the mask move out of the area and change the cartridge. If you think you inhaled too much drink milk for first aid, if you feel something's not right seek medical attention. Seriously though, a properly fitted mask with appropriate cartridge is enough. That's it and you're good to go! I worked in utilities for years, been handling chlorine gas, what you're using is significantly milder/safer. EDIT: just clarified something.
