I have the Raspberry Pi 3 and I just recently migrated from ownCloud. It runs a lot faster on my Pi 3 than ownCloud and the mobile app is fantastic. If anything, get it on the Pi 3. After all, it is 10x faster than the Pi 2 (they literally advertised that). Runs smooth, quick and I’m having no issu… Answer from Crasha on help.nextcloud.com

November 1, 2016 - We have the Nextcloud Box which runs on a Pi2. Support for Pi3 should be there soon, but it’s not very different than the Pi2, especially in terms of RAM. I’ve seen posts mentioning some Odroids. What is the experience like? Any other hardware you found interesting?

Looking for a single board computer option for a NextCloud Server

Rockpro64 with EMMC module and 4GB RAM. Probably the best sub-$100 board you can get right now for NC. Will blow away the RPi in terms of performance.

Best cheap hardware to run Nextcloud on?
I was thinking a cache server might come handy too with these specs. Just add a sata disk and it’s ready, maybe a (pf/opn)sense server 😃 More on help.nextcloud.com

Raspberry Pi 4, Odroid HC2 / HC1 / XU4, Rock64 and Pro, etc. Which one is the best and how much does ram matter (2 gb vs 4 gb)?

I am planning on using NC to backup files, photos, track my phone, host recipes, and maybe a few others things. Preferably, I would use it alongside a tool like PhotoPrism.

Thanks!

Best SBCs for NAS Use
For a basic file or even music server, a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ or A+ should suffice, and you could maybe even get by with a Raspberry Pi Zero/Zero W. However, the Raspberry Pi 4 affords the best specs for home server use.

Question - Best SBC's out there for cloud storage | Tom's Hardware Forum
October 26, 2020 - What storage (SATA, USB, etc) you plan to use? This will limit your choices. Aside from that - you don't need super-duper SBC for a NAS which will be primary accessed from cloud (over slow Internet link). Get an RPi 3, play with it, install eg Nextcloud, see how it works.

r/NextCloud on Reddit: First-time user: What hardware do I need?
January 24, 2023 -

Hello, all. I am planning to build a home server for several purposes:

  • Replacing Google Drive/OneDrive general purpose with about 1 TB of storage

  • Replacing cloud services for email, calendar, notes, reminders, camera uploads etc.

  • Media playback (or at least storage) for videos, music, audiobooks

  • Game save syncing - Especially retro game saves between devices. NOT game server

  • VPN

  • Email server

  • Password Manager

  • File sharing

  • NextCloud talk?

  • Matrix messaging?

  • Future expansion

  • backups for phone, PC, and this server with file-history/time machine recovery

I wanted to use a Raspberry Pi 4 (4 or 8 gb), but there still seems to be a storage, and the hardware is aging. I want to run in Raid 1 with an off-location backup as well. I would think I would need 2 2 TB, if not 4 TB hard drives plus a small emmc boot. This isnot including the off-location backup, which I anticipated probably only needs an SBC and single hard drive. Is this feasible? Can I expect a stable experience? What hardware, storage should I be looking at? Is an ARM SBC enough?

March 19, 2017 - Another new very interesting one with RPI form-factor (shipping 31st of July): Doesn’t have SATA, but USB3 which should be good enough for most needs. Also has a faster CPU and up to 4GB ram, which I think is a BIG plus if you want to run some additional apps and services on it.
