A long carving called a frieze runs around the fifth floor. It shows Louisianans in war and peace. There are also 22 square portraits of important people in Louisiana history. These are on the outside of the House and Senate chambers. The front of the Capitol has a large stairway.

The front door opens directly into Memorial Hall. The hall is often referred to as “the rotunda” because it takes the place of what is found in most capitol buildings, is 124 feet long, 40 feet wide, and four stories high. Double life-sized sculptures of Louisiana’s famous governors stand in the hall.

The map lists each of the 64 parishes (counties) in the state around its border and depicts symbols of Louisiana’s major industries and natural products. Solid bronze elevator doors on the north side of Memorial Hall feature reliefs of Louisiana’s American governors, starting with the first, W.C.C.

August 8, 2015 - Out in front of the tower is Capitol Park. At the center of the circle is a giant statue of Huey Long, and he is actually buried there as well. I guess that is fitting considering his ties to the building.

August 3, 2012 - The approach to the main entrance is by way of 48 steps, one representing each of the states of the Union at the time the capitol building was completed. The top step includes the Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum ("One from Many"). Carved Pelicans, the state bird of Louisiana, can be seen on the sides of the step and as visitors approach the doors they are greeted by the words, "We have lived long, but this is the greatest work of our whole lives...The United States take rank today among the first powers of the world."

I've seen a film where the lights in the House chamber were going on and off around midnight. They probably have spirits here; probably Huey and Dr. Weiss." Once exiting Hasten's office and taking the stairs down, I cross the flag-filled Memorial Hall. There are reliefs of assorted Louisiana governors on the doors to the elevators.
