Title says it. My personal issue is going from ATX to ITX, having a surplus of NVME drives, no (available) SATA drives, and having no way to use them without going to USB (3.2) which, from what I gather, is still inferior to SATA III in terms of internal connectivity.
And before someone posts one of the plentiful M.2 to SATA adapters out there, those are all NGFF M.2, not NVME.
Is there something between the two interfaces that makes this unachievable, or just a lack of demand? I could throw them in my NAS with a PCIE adapter, but that seems like a tremendous waste..
I'm planning to replace the spinning HDD of a not so young PC, but I'm wondering if buying a M.2 NVME drive + an adapter board could be a good idea instead of a regular SSD SATA drive; essentially, my purpose is to use a more future-proof format for the drive itself with this PC. In the future it will be easier to reuse this drive with newer PCs and laptops when this PC will be... decomissioned.
I'm aware of the performance bottleneck of SATA.
Can you suggest (or even suggest to avoid) some brand/models of NVME-to-SATA adapters? Do these adapters let to inspect the SMART informations of the installed NVME drive through the smartctl command?

I’ve searched a lot, but I can’t find what I’m looking for. I want to buy another M.2 SSD, but I don’t have an extra slot, and I also can’t use a PCIe slot. So, I’m looking for an adapter that I can plug into a SATA port, but it shouldn’t slow down the transfer speed of the M.2 SSD.
I’m wondering if the SSD has a read speed of 6000 MB/s and the adapter only supports half that speed, wouldn’t that limit the SSD’s performance?
If anyone has any suggestions or alternatives, please let me know!
I'm looking to change my boot drive from a SATA 3 m.2 SSD to an NVMe m.2 SSD, my mobo only has 1 m.2 slot so I'm planning to get an m.2 to USB adapter and then keep the SATA 3 SSD in the adapter to keep as an external drive, the thing is that I'm not sure that it would even work, here's the thing:
I'm planning to get this one (a cheap one but meh, I won't probably use it more than 4-5 times ever.
I would copy all my main drive data to the NVMe via the adapter.
Then I would unplug the SATA 3 and change it for the NVMe.
Plug the SATA 3 into the adapter and just have it as an external drive in my desk or something.
Since they're different protocols and everything I'm not sure about it, I know about boards that have m.2 but don't support NVMe, If I get a specifically NVMe to USB will it work with both SATA 3 and NVMe, I'm sorry if this sounds dumb or something, many thanks in advance :)

Quell'adattatore non esiste, dovrai procurarti una scheda PCIe con uno slot NVMe M.2, oppure inserirla in un alloggiamento USB e usarla esternamente se non hai slot PCIe liberi.
Qualsiasi adattatore che converte M2 in 2.5 SATA funzionerà solo con unità M2 SATA, non con quelle NVMe.
Sì, esistono adattatori NVMe a SATA da 2,5" che hanno le stesse dimensioni di un normale disco da 2,5".
Fai una ricerca per "NVMe a SATA" e troverai molti risultati tra cui scegliere.
So I have an old minidesktop i'd like to convert into a homelab server. It only accepts a single 2.5 inch SATA disk. I have a samsung 990 EVO plus 4TB m.2 SSD I'd like to use in it's place. I've searched for adapters, but all I find is enclosures with some exotic connector that doesn't fit the SATA connector.
Is this because Sata and NVMe are inherently incompatible? Or am i just not finding the right one?
The mini desktop does not have any PCIe slots so that's not really an option either.
Only alternative i see at the moment is using a USB enclosure for the drive. But I'm hesitant due to fears of reliability and the clunkyness of having something dangling from a usb port...
