Data Deduplication for HDDs is possible
I've run it manually on some volumes, like my ISO repo (actual ISO 's, not pretend ones). It saved a crap load of space. I don't think there's much need otherwise, but if it helps you, I don't see why not use it. They probably don't enable it because they don't include enough RAM usually, and probably don't want to tax the CPU for the average user. More on reddit.com

I am thinking of purchasing a cheap NAS drive which supports RAID1 and if possible some kind of deduplication. Does anyone have any opinions regarding this subject?

I am currently using an old desktop PC which I installed linux on one drive and managed to configure software RAID on a couple of 2TB disks. It works fine but all other components apart from the 2TB disks are around 10 years of age. Also a NAS would be smaller, consume less electricity and have a decent management interface.

We already use some smaller modelles at remote sides withot Veeam, but we have 0 experience with other vendors. ... The most important consideration is not backup performance, but restore performance. Because ExaGrid is the only dedupe device to use a landing zone, it can recover from this 'normal disk' area without having to rehydrate deduped VMs.

What is Data Deduplication? | Barracuda Networks
January 28, 2026 - With deduplication, just one copy of these individual virtual machines can be stored. Everytime the engine discovers a piece of data that is stored somewhere else in the storage environment, the storage system saves a small pointer in the data copy’s place, thereby freeing up the blocks that would normally be occupied. As you might expect, different vendors handle deduplication in different ways.

r/synology on Reddit: Data Deduplication for HDDs is possible
December 21, 2023 -

I've found it is very easy to enable data deduplication for Btrfs volumes on HDDs in DSM 7.2.1 and my tests confirm it works.

So I'm wondering why Synology has not enabled data deduplication for HDDs - not even for their own HDDs. Is there some technical reason that I'm not aware of?

https://github.com/007revad/Synology_enable_Deduplication

  • Works for any brand SATA SSD, SAS SSD and M.2 SSD drives in DSM 7.01 and later.

  • Now works for HDDs in DSM 7.2.1 and later.

  • Now works for M.2 drives in a PCIe adapter card (E10M20-T1, M2D20, M2D18 or M2D17) in DSM 7.2.1 and later.

April 6, 2015 - The best way to see what deduplication might achieve for you in terms of storage capacity is to get it running within your environment, and thankfully, that’s now achievable thanks to the general reliability of SDFS. If you’re not aware of SDFS, it’s the keystone product from Opendedup, an open source Linux project.
