What is special about Recoleta Cemetery?
Does it have an interesting history? Well, it was the first place to be formally determined as a public cemetery in the city. Is there a cultural Argentinian belief why each grave has a mausoleum? Did the city decide to burry the most notable people there from the start, or did it unintentionally happen? No, but you're getting a conclusion from a very particular cemetery. It's situated in a place which is, and has always been a more affluent part of the city. If you walk down to Avenida Libertador you'll see more than one palace which used to be the manor of a large estate. So naturally richer and notable people were buried there and mausolea were built. This is not the case in the other, larger cemeteries of the city like Chacarita and Flores Does the average Argentinian feel any connection to this place? I'd say not really More on reddit.com

Ghost Stories at La Recoleta, Buenos Aires - Latitude Adjustment
September 29, 2024 - Many hours later, it appeared that she had finally died – and this was confirmed by at least two doctors. Rufina was laid to rest in La Recoleta. As the weeks went by, there were rumors of strange noises coming from Rufina’s tomb, and cemetery workers found the lid to her coffin slightly ajar (are your hairs standing on end yet?).

Is Recoleta Cemetery Haunted? Legends and Ghost Stories from Buenos Aires’ Famous Necropolis
July 2, 2025 - It’s not officially labeled a haunting, but there’s an undeniable presence around Liliana’s resting place. A lingering sadness that feels almost tangible. I lingered there for a long time, struck by the beauty of the sculpture—and the heartbreak behind it. In a cemetery filled with marble angels and generals, Liliana’s tomb feels intensely human. A reminder that tragedy doesn’t just belong to history—it can strike in the most modern of times. Among Recoleta Cemetery’s grand marble vaults and delicate ironwork, one tomb looks like it belongs on a windswept mountain trail rather than in the middle of Buenos Aires.
