October 11, 2021 - It was well made with some good features for the price back in the 80s. This was the entry level that sold for around 250 bucks, 200 when on sale. I think this table was (for me anyway) better than the linear tracking or some of the tables geared to specific B&O systems.

I’ve been using the B&O beosound stage for about 2 years. Still absolutely love everything about it. I have considered changing to a 5.1 or 7.1 setup but the audio quality from the soundbar has made me want to keep it. I also just really like how it looks Aug 21, 2022

Hi there, I’m interested in buying a B&O Beogram RX2 turntable that comes with a sound smith stylus. According to the seller it was NOS when they bought it 12 years ago and the stylus has about 60 hours on it, then it was in storage.

Just wondering what are the thoughts and suggestions on this turntable is? I love the B&O designs, but to my understanding I would have to buy a preamp and it would be replacing my veteran Audiotechnica lp60x.

Any knowledge or advice accepted, thank you!

They are fantastic tables. The rx2 uses an ultra low mass tone arm along with a cartridge that doesn't need much tracking force weight. By design they can pickup every little detail hidden away in a record. Soundsmith also makes high quality carts. The rx2 is mechanically simple and doesn't often need service if used regularly. The only thing that tends to wear out are their platter belts. They are also fully automatic. Auto record size detection and speed selection. The center section of the platter basically weighs the record to see if it's a 45 or and lp. The platter and pickup sit on their own floating chassis. This provides isolation from any external movement or vibration. You can dance next to the table without issue. Ive actually moved a table while playing and it didn't miss a beat. If you ever run into a TX2, that adds repeat play. The main negatives of these tables is cart selection. They can only use mmc series carts. BO sold the rights to Soundsmith so that is the only source of carts. Last I checked their cheapest car is around 200. But for 200$ you are getting as nice or nicer cart than you would spending 200$ on another brand. The other negative is its drive system. The belt drive servo motor works well but there are a ton of tables from the 80s that have quartz timing for improved accuracy. Honestly I can't tell the difference in fluctuations between my rx2 tx2 and my denon dp45 (has one of the most accurate platters of its time) I will admit I am a little biased. October 11, 2021 - I've got one and like it. I found it off of Craiglist last year from a guy in his late 60's downsizing. Still had the original box and manual. I'm using the MMC4 cartridge and it sounds great to me. Then again I still listen to my original Dead Kennedy's and Jonathan Richman albums from the 80's.

June 27, 2022 - I was just worried he might not be able to fix the suspension on mine so I went with Sound Smith first. Supposedly GrooveTickler upgrades the B&O carts to being above the SMMC4 for a price similar to the SMMC4. Neither option is cheap but worth it to me cause I love the look, functionality and size of the RX2.

I recently discovered a Beogram RX2 in my family's basement and have been extremely interested in getting it up and running again. I plugged it in and everything seems to be working fine, the only problem is that the counterweight on it does not seem to be working. The tonearm never actually touches the record when I put one on. I was just wondering if there was anyone here who has experience with an RX2 and knows how/where I could remedy this problem. Thanks for any response.

Hello from (probably) the only other RX2 owner here! What do you mean the counter weight isn't working? If the black cylinder is at the end of the tone arm and the threads are working you should be able to adjust it. What cartridge are you using? The only things i can think of (other than a silly mistake of pressing the cue button rather than the play button (on the front right corner)) is that your counterweight calibration is way off.

To balance the tone arm, take the cartridge off, flip it upside down, and out it back on (so the needle points up), push down the black jawn in the center of the platter so it thinks theres a record on it (do this without a record on it), push the cue button to get things spinning, set the weight to the 0 position, press the cue button again (would drop the arm on to the record), and the arm should stay put, if it goes up then your zero point is actually a positive number; if the arm goes down them your zero point is at a negative value. To calibrate the weight, hold the silver part of the weight, and turn the black part until your zero is infact zero.

Run on sentences typed on an ipad can the terribly difficult to understand, let me know if you have any questions!

Hi !

A friend found a Beogram RX2 turntable in her cellar and gave it to me. I plugged the turntable in, and its electronics work (the arm automatically positions itself on the vinyl), but the sound that comes out is not good (crackling, defects). I think, although I'm not completely sure, that the MMC 5 cell is damaged or rusty, and that it's responsible for the bad sound.

Looking on the internet, it seems that replacing an MMC cell is very expensive, as production of these cells has been discontinued.

Is it worth trying to repair it? What's more effective? Take it to a specialist repairer and ask for a quote? Find a replacement cell and try to repair it myself?

Or simply drop it off at a recycling center, and let an enthusiast pick it up.

I have spun my RX-2 since I bought it new in 1986. As far as I have found, there is no fixin' a cartridge. Soundsmith.com is the only place that manufactures new cartridges, and yes, they are pricey. They do offer re-tipping for some of their products, but it doesn't seem to be an option for the MMC If you're patient for another RX to pop up in your local market, you could buy that for the cartridge Remember, others may be in the same boat on discovering the cost to revive their TT, so they do come available from time to time. The guys who usually snap up equipment at garage sales and estate sales usually leave these behind for that very same reason. Another table to look for is a Dual CS-607. They were designed to use the B&O MMC cartridge, so you might find one on one of those. I love my RX-2. It has been the centerpiece of my system for 40 years. I have had it serviced about 7 years ago, and it has gone through 3 cartridges over that 40 year period. I'm afraid that this will probably be the last cartridge that I replace. I'll be very sad when it finally gets beyond usefulness.

because rubber is used in cartridge manufacture, it can indeed dry out and affect the sound. other elements change behaviors as well, especially due to storage environments internationally, SoundSmith and KKB notes, is the source for replacement MMC series cartridges..

It sounds very good (almost as good as my TD-145), and because of its suspension design, it's great at handling external vibration. If the stylus/cart is in good shape, it's a pretty good turntable for $150.

My dad is looking to replace his stylus for his Beogram RX2, while he’s always had TT’s and stuff he’s not incredibly knowledgeable about them, nor am i , and i cant see his in person, but doesn’t anyone know what would be best? I think most if not all B&O turntables use proprietary cartridges, hence you would be looking to replace the stylus with this, the MMC1 . They are scarce, and expensive. [Edit] Or, you could try to get a new replacement from Soundsmith .

B&O made really great turntables, the problem with them now is that they had proprietary cartridges and so you would need to buy new old stock or new from Soundsmith and they don't come cheap.

What amp see you using? Many come with pretty good preamps. Like the Sony dh190. They are super cheap. Great power and good preamp.

I would keep the 1200. There's only one place that sells the stylus for the B&O and they are extremely expensive.

B&O cartridge replacements will cost you more than a 1200mkII, something to consider as a B&O table owner. I wish I kept my 1200mkII. Used it for over 25 years and never needed service.

I'm new to vinyl, and I'm starting to grow my collection, a little bit. Right now I have a cheaper ION USB turntable, and want to upgrade to something better. I know my parents have a Bang and Olufsen Beogram RX that they don't use anymore, so that would be free for the taking. Anybody have any opinions on this TT?

B&O makes a nice table so if it's free why not? The downside with B&O's is they have a proprietary cartridge and mount. The needle is also not replaceable. You have to replace the entire cartridge or have the stylus on your existing one re-tipped. SoundSmith is making replicas of the MMC line of cartridges that B&O made but they are not cheap. You can find information about those here http://www.sound-smith.com/cartridges/indexBeo.html . Bottom line, if you have to put hundreds of dollars into it to get it to work properly, it's probably not worth the effort. The money could instead be spent on a different vintage table that has more standard and easily accessible parts.

Can't speak to the RX, but I bought a Beogram 5000 from the original owner a couple years ago and love it. At the time, it was one of the best tables in the world. The downsides to B&O is that they have a proprietary cart with a needle that can't be replaced and if there is something wrong with the table it will probably be expensive to fix. Like the other post said, sound smith is making replicas (The guy I bought mine from threw in a new belt and a new Sound Smith cart along with the original). If it's free, take it. If everything seems to work properly, awesome. If it needs a new cart, well I'll leave that one up to you, they are expensive.
