I was looking at the EXIF data for the Artemis II mission, especially the one shot on iPhone and wondered how the gps behaves in space, especially away from the earth and not in LEO, and what the phone would say if they had geotagging enabled.

GPS receivers work very well in LEO. In fact, they work a bit better than on the surface, due to the lack of atmospheric distortion. The GPS constellation is above LEO in MEO. They're even used in orbiters. JPL, for example has the GRACE series of formation flying spacecraft to measure Earth's gravity. Consumer-level GPS receivers turn themselves off by convention, a.k.a COCOM Limits . Above 59,000 feet and/or 1,000 knots. So for your specific question, a consumer phone wouldn't report GPS at all, unless they got a special firmware update to remove the COCOM limits. (Edit: Typo on altitude)
