Hypocholesterolemia - Wikipedia
March 10, 2026 - In the elderly, low cholesterol may confer a health risk that may not be offset by the beneficial effects of cholesterol lowering. Similarly, for elderly patients admitted to hospital, low cholesterol may predict short-term mortality. The prevalence of hypocholesterolemia in the elderly ranges ...

Cholesterol biosynthesis enzyme HMG-CoA reductase is the target of most of the hypocholesterolemic drugs since it is the rate-limiting enzyme. However, myositis, gastrointestinal symptoms, pharyngitis, and pain are commonly associated side effects with these types of drugs.

Hypocholesterolemic Effects of Soluble Fibers | Springer Nature Link
Diets supplemented with oat products significantly lower serum cholesterol concentrations of humans (deGroot et al, 1963; Kirby et al., 1981; Judd and Truswell, 1981; Anderson et al., 1984b) and rats (Chen and Anderson, 1979). Since 1977 we have evaluated the hypocholesterolemic effects of oat bran; here we review these results in order to discuss the potential mechanisms involved for the cholesterol-lowering properties of soluble fibers.

Hypocholesterolemic effects of diets containing different levels of kishk as a dried fermented milk–whole wheat mixture in experimental rats - ScienceDirect
April 23, 2016 - Wheat fiber reduced serum cholesterol level by increasing the surface area for bile binding or altering the quantity of short-chain fatty acids [50]. Several studies have shown that propionate generated from dietary fibers containing polysaccharides exhibits hypocholesterolemic effects and offsets acetate generation, which tends to increase serum cholesterol via a mechanism probably involving liver lipogenesis [51], [52], [53], [54]. The reduction of cholesterol is possibly a sum of several effects; the most accepted one is decreased absorption of bile acids that causes removal of steroids from the body by fecal excretion, resulting in increased catabolism of cholesterol, an increase in the secretion of bile acids, a decrease in lipoprotein cholesterol secretion, and a reduction in the total body pool of cholesterol [55].

Summary of the Scientific Conference on the Efficacy of Hypocholesterolemic Dietary Interventions | Circulation
Several mechanisms of hypocholesterolemic action have been proposed. These include formation of mixed cholesterol-sitosterol crystals, competition for absorption sites, influence on cholesterol-rich micelles, competitive esterification, enhanced cholesterol excretion, and interference with cholesterol biosynthesis. Little work has been done in this area. Low-fat diets are unavoidably high in carbohydrates. The DELTA study (Dietary Effects on Lipids and Thrombogenic Activity) produced a variable, not statistically significant increase in triglyceride levels.

Hypocholesterolemic drugs (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl–coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, or “statins”) lower the risk of both, BPH and prostate cancer [32,33]. Foods high in cholesterol and saturated fat are rich in arachidonic acid as well, which is the main precursor of inflammation.

Hypocholesterolemic Effects of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Are Mediated by Altered Gene Expression in Hepatic Bile and Cholesterol Pathways of Male Hamsters, , - ScienceDirect
May 1, 2010 - This suggests that HPMC supplementation affected both cholesterol and bile acid synthesis. Our data confirm that altered hepatic expression of lipid metabolism-related genes, possibly due to modulation of fecal bile acid excretion and intestinal cholesterol absorption, contributes to the lipid-lowering effects of HPMC.
