When glucose enters your blood stream, it attaches to a protein in your red blood cells called hemoglobin. The A1C test checks your red blood cells for the percentage of hemoglobin with glucose attached (glycated).

r/prediabetes on Reddit: Honestly what is a normal A1c? For non diabetic
October 21, 2022 -

My A1c was 5,5% a couple of month ago where I started to see I was insuline resistant so I’m probably lower now with all the effort I made (I need to check now for a new one) but despite from that what is a truly normal A1c? No way mine was normal despite being below the cut off… I’m aiming for 4,5/4,6% if I keep my diet I’m pretty sure it attainable but will I ever be considered like a “normal” non diabetic even though I work hard at it ? Trying to stay away from complications for the long term… (33F)

Recent studies have also demonstrated that an HbA1c threshold of 6.0% appropriately discriminates between diabetes diagnosed by OGTT-based methods and nondiabetic subjects [21]. Therefore, our results suggest that the introduction of an HbA1c threshold of 6.0% in screening for diabetes is ideally ...
