Go to Google Drive either by clicking the Drive Icon or by visiting drive.google.com while you are online, and the sync process begins automatically. (You see a notification in the status area on the lower right of the screen showing you the progress of the syncing operation.)

May 15, 2026 - First, download and install the extension Google Docs Offline, found here. You will need to give it permission to access your Google Drive, which may require authentication if you haven’t authenticated on Chrome before.

You can use many Google Apps features offline, but only if you first set them up while you have internet access. Keep in mind that if you make edits while offline, collaborators will not see your edits and any edits collaborators who are online make will supersede your changes. Once you regain internet access, any offline edits will be synced. The one and only caveat to using offline access via Google Drive Desktop Client is that you cannot make .gdocs, .gsheet, or .gslides files available offline (they first must be converted to either MS Office or an open format (such as .odt, .ods, or .odp).

November 10, 2022 - The Drive for Desktop app does offer an option called "Mirror Files", where it will just make all your files and folders available for offline use, all the time.
