October 17, 2025 - You can read our article What is a Compressor? for more details if you care. The main point is that a compressor still lets some audio volume past the threshold while reducing that volume by some ratio. A limiter lets no audio past it's threshold.

November 8, 2024 - Limiters are a critical safeguard to include in any professional audio amplifier’s DSP. They allow you to set level threshold values, which ensure that the signal level cannot exceed a specific range.

Limiter - Wikipedia
2 weeks ago - Limiters are common as a safety device in broadcast applications to prevent overmodulation and in audio mastering to avoid digital clipping, lossy coding errors, or the phonograph needle from jumping out of the groove. Limiters are also used as protective features in some components of sound reinforcement systems (e.g., powered mixing boards and power amplifiers) and in some bass amplifiers, to prevent unwanted distortion or loudspeaker damage.

Why is a limiter used in sound systems? - Quora
For home theater you often hear about 5.1 and 7.1 channel systems. In these cases: ... Simply put, a compressor stops the audio from getting too loud! To do this, it reduces the volume of incoming audio once the sound crosses a certain ‘threshold’ in decibels (dB). Once the signal passes this threshold, the volume of the track is reduced by an amount in dB designated by the ratio setting. A limiter is intended to ‘limit’ the maximum level, normally to provide ‘overload protection’. ...

A limiter prevents the need to gain ride a system. In this sense, the limiter acts as a compressor. Increase the volume so that the quiet parts are loud enough to be heard and the limiter automatically prevents the loud passages from clipping the amplifiers or overpowering the speakers.

October 30, 2023 - No that is not correct, use the limiters in the Driverack and set them so that all outputs activate at the same signal threshold, It's usually the lows that reach limiting first but you don't want the other bands to keep getting louder when that happens. ... You might not want the lead vocals being pulled down by the kick drum. r/livesound on Reddit: Limiter for small pa system?
July 3, 2023 -

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question, or if it's a stupid question.

Basically I'm a hobby DJ playing mostly bassy electronic music (DnB, dubstep, bass house etc) and I have a small entry level active pa system (Alto Professional, 2x 18" subs and 2x 10" full range tops. 4kw rms altogether). My friends and I have recently starting taking the rig out to do little raves in abandoned bunkers and such. My question is, should I get a limiter to protect my soundsystem? I believe the subs claim to have built-in limiters but I don't really want to rely on those. If a standalone limiter is a good idea then what product would you recommend? Sorry for the long story, just wanted to give a full picture of my scenario

Very basic setup, currently running XLRs out of our DJ controllers directly into the subs' inputs and then out of each sub into the tops, so ideally I'd like a limiter that isn't designed to be part of a full sound rack.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I've always just known a limiter as the thing you put at the end of a master chain to give the song volume but I don't really know what exactly it does/what the uses of a limiter are. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for good limiters on the market or free ones that would be great!
