Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question, or if it's a stupid question.
Basically I'm a hobby DJ playing mostly bassy electronic music (DnB, dubstep, bass house etc) and I have a small entry level active pa system (Alto Professional, 2x 18" subs and 2x 10" full range tops. 4kw rms altogether). My friends and I have recently starting taking the rig out to do little raves in abandoned bunkers and such. My question is, should I get a limiter to protect my soundsystem? I believe the subs claim to have built-in limiters but I don't really want to rely on those. If a standalone limiter is a good idea then what product would you recommend? Sorry for the long story, just wanted to give a full picture of my scenario
Very basic setup, currently running XLRs out of our DJ controllers directly into the subs' inputs and then out of each sub into the tops, so ideally I'd like a limiter that isn't designed to be part of a full sound rack.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m not sure this is the best idea long term, but can work in a pinch: Clipping a mixer is a big problem only if speakers or amps are at their max. So you could set your active speaker sensitivity so high that they don’t burn out even when mixer is at full volume. This way the speakers will play the clipped signal from the mixer, which will still sound clipped, but it won’t melt your amps/speakers and the DJ can’t turn it any louder. Also if the DJ can turn the master way up they think they are louder than at 1/2 master, even if the volume is the same. So it solves a part of the problem at the root 😉 I think the problem with dbx or similar is playing to the limiter for a long time will still overheat your gear. It should be for short time protection only, not to be on all the time.

I've always just known a limiter as the thing you put at the end of a master chain to give the song volume but I don't really know what exactly it does/what the uses of a limiter are. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for good limiters on the market or free ones that would be great!

A limiter places a hard limit on max amplitude, thus eliminating transient peaks that keep the full signal from being normalized to a high amplitude. By removing spikes, you can turn the whole thing up. Used aggressively, it can have dramatic effects but also destroy pleasing dynamics, or worse, really color sound. An adaptive limiter tries to be smart about managing its own release setting, changing it according to what is happening in the music, rather than using a consistent release time set by the user.

Many plugin limiters are adaptive these days. Same with compressors. It just means the release is dependent on the attack and/or input, and whatever other stuff it’s told to care about. A plugin limiter usually looks ahead a little (it does so by adding some processing latency) and sees a big spike coming up. Limiters duck the volume (attack) at that moment very fast, and usually come back up (release) very fast. It keeps it sounding transparent. However, make it change the signal a lot, and you will be able to hear its affect a lot more. Limiters can be used like compressors, to some degree. They are the same principle most times, they are just very fast and look ahead. I use them often to squeeze instrument stems together, and again at the final output to stay at and below 0. I’m sure there’s more info that others are more knowledgeable on. That’s just what I wanted to know when I was learning about them.
