China produces and consumes almost as much coal as the rest of the world combined - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)
China is by far the world's largest producer and consumer of coal, accounting for 46% of global coal production and 49% of global coal consumption—almost as much as the rest of the world combined.
China consumes more coal than rest of the world combined.
At the same time, China is investing heavily in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and is building some of the world’s largest capacities in these sectors. More on reddit.com
Why China Is Building So Many Coal Plants Despite Its Solar And Wind Boom
"So many coal plants" is about 5-10% of the new wind/solar capacity. These plans take 5-10 years. So the explanation is very trivial. They wanted some cold reserve for about 10-20% of peak demand as a hedge while the storage and load shifting market matures. Their behavior of using slightly less coal but 5-8% more electricity last year is fully consistent with this. It's not confusing at all. More on reddit.com
Explain Chinese coal consumption to me
TL;DR: China is rapidly building both coal and renewable energy—seemingly contradictory, but here's why it's more complex: Grid stability: Many new coal plants are used as “backup” for renewables, not to run at full capacity. They’re used to stabilize the grid when solar/wind output is low (especially in regions with extreme weather or weak grid infrastructure). Modern coal tech: New plants are more efficient and emit less per unit of energy than older ones. Many older, dirtier plants are being phased out. Massive renewable growth: China leads the world in installing solar and wind. By 2030, they plan to double their current capacity, and are already ahead of schedule. Emission peak goal: China has pledged to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and go carbon-neutral by 2060. The current coal expansion may be a transitional phase while renewables scale up and energy storage tech improves. Capacity ≠ output: Just because a coal plant is built doesn’t mean it will be heavily used. Usage rates matter more than the raw number of plants. So while it looks like coal is booming, China's bigger energy picture is shifting heavily toward renewables. The coal buildup is partly about keeping the lights on during that shift. Why does China rely so heavily on coal
Because they (correctly) project huge increases in power consumption due to their developing economy, and decided to cover that increased demand with coal due to it's cheap cost and availability. China is also the largest investor in and installer of renewables in the world. And the largest manufacturer of solar. So if there's a future to be found in renewables (and I believe there is), you can expect China to be heavily involved.
More on reddit.comIs China reducing its coal consumption?
China has pledged to peak coal consumption before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. In recent years, coal consumption growth has slowed, and China leads the world in solar and wind capacity additions. However, absolute coal use has continued to rise as economic growth demands more power. The transition is gradual, with coal still generating ~60% of China's electricity.

What percentage of world coal does China consume?
China consumes more than 50% of all coal burned globally, according to BP Statistical Review and IEA data. Despite being home to 18% of the world's population, China's coal consumption exceeds that of all other countries combined. The US, the next largest consumer, uses roughly 7% of world coal.

How does China's coal consumption compare to India and the USA?
China consumes roughly 5x more coal than India and 10x more than the USA. India is the world's second-largest coal consumer (approximately 10–12% of global total) and is still growing its coal use. The USA has been reducing coal consumption since 2005 due to cheap natural gas and renewable energy growth.

Im sure you can do the same graph with clean energy and also have china on top, they make so much energy from whatever resource they have.. they need to provide to so many people and industries
