September 5, 2018 - In a new review article, Attarha and researchers from the University of California, San Francisco suggest that the background buzz of white noise – which some advocate as a means of lessening the perceived symptoms of tinnitus – could actually be harmful to our central auditory system. While the biological mechanisms behind tinnitus aren't fully understood, scientists are continually finding evidence that the symptoms are tied to measurable changes in various parts of the brain that go beyond simple hearing loss – although tinnitus, especially when it first appears, is often associated with exposure to loud, traumatic noises that damage the eardrum and hearing.

As we have argued above, white noise might modulate midbrain activity (Rausch et al., 2013) and cortico–striatal interactions in a way that puts the system in a state of enhanced sensitivity to external stimulation and reduced stability of currently held representations, putatively by enhancing connectivity between sensory and prefrontal brain areas (Ward et al., 2010). Such an effect could be mediated by decreases in tonic and increases in phasic dopamine signaling from the SN/VTA to the striatum (Braver and Cohen, 2000; Badre, 2012; D’Ardenne et al., 2012; Rausch et al., 2013).

Since my daughter was stillborn I tried sleeping better with whitenoise. This turned out to be mega effective, and I've been doing it ever since (5 months). I measured the dB level and it's 39 db. Should I be worried this is causing damage to my brain? Ears are fine if its kept at 4 db max I read.

Wondered about this myself. At 39 dB you're well below the 85 or so that's considered harmful to your ear drums. As for the brain, I'm unaware of any research showing an impact, but unsure if it's actually been studied. For me, I'd go with what works. If concerned maybe start methodically tapering off and see how you do.

Having heard white noise a million times during music production, yes. At least it might be bad for your ears if you want to perceive all frequencies and therefore turn up the volume. It's not designed to be pleasant to your ears. It doesn't consider that the ear is more sensitive to certain frequencies. White noise is just a random signal with equal/constant loudness across all frequencies. Try grey or pink noise. It's noise more adapted to the Fletcher Munson curve (a curve representing how the ear subjectively perceives the loudness across all frequencies). Essentially grey and pink noise lets you listen to more frequencies without damaging your ears doing so.
