Samba Configuration with Webmin - Linux.com
April 19, 2010 - You may have read my recent article “Easy Samba Setup,” which illustrated just how easy it can be to set up the Samba file and print server. Yes, that task can be easy, but the method I outlined does require you to take advantage of the command line. There are a lot of users who shy away from the command line as if it were the plague. For those users there are options. One of those options is the Samba tool from the Gadmin suite of tools. The Webmin ...

r/linuxquestions on Reddit: Samba Config via Webmin
July 24, 2019 -

Good Morning,

Trying to setup Samba via Webmin and had a few questions. I've setup a logical drive between 3 external HDDs. It took a few minutes, but I mounted it for Samba as /etc/Storage/Directory where "storage" is my logical drive.

  1. How do I create guest users and passwords? I haven't found a simple way.

  2. How do I go about finding this Samba server on the network?

This is so strange to me that I'm commenting just to keep track of how this gets resolved.

You've set up 3 external HDDs via USB as a logical volume?

Just for my information, what commands did you use to do that?

How did you set up the logical volume?

What is the output of lvdisplay, pvdisplay & vgdisplay?

I agree with u/Max-Normal-88 that you should not mount things under /etc. That's why there is a /mnt, for mountpoints.

/etc is really only supposed to root accessible, not shared.

So, perhaps create a folder called /mnt/Storage and mount the logical volume at that mountpoint.

Also, the mountpoint should be /mnt/Storage, not /mnt/Storage/Directory. After the logical volume is mounted, then you can create /mnt/Storage/Directory. Until it is mounted at /mnt/Storage, if you create /mnt/Storage/Directory, the sub-folder Directory will be created on your local drive, not on the Samba logical volume.

I don't know how to create users and passwords using webmin. I have always done it using the command line.

But usually, the user must already exist as a Linux user in /etc/passwd. (I could be wrong here but I've always done it like this and it works for me)

Then, I would create the user with

smbpasswd -a <username>

Again, I could be totally wrong here, but the internet will correct me. The internet hates people being wrong :)

Now, does one find a Samba server?

Samba, if I remember correctly, has an election(?) which announces a master(?)

https://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/network_administration_guides/using_samba_book/ch05_01_03.html

So, one of the Samba server(s) on the network needs to become the master browser(?)

I normally run nmap to find stuff on my networks.

10:55 AM:root@tpad:~# nmap 192.168.10.111

Once the nmap scan shows port 139 open, I know that's a Samba server(?)

Then, I can try to connect with smbclient -L //<ip-address-of-Samba-server> to get a list of shares.

I don't if this helps.

Don’t use /etc for that purpose

Depending on how you set things up, your share should be discoverable using DLNA by clients

r/linux4noobs on Reddit: How do i make a Samba server?
December 23, 2020 -

So, i've spent the last 2 hours trying to make Samba work, but till now i've got access denied trying to access a share. I'm trying to access as an anonymous user, used "guest ok = yes" and "public = yes", deactivated read only and activated writable, browsable, double checked the path and i'm just tired at this point. I would post the entire smb.conf here, but that would only make this post larger non-necessairly

EDIT: Forgot to say that i am using Linux Mint.

EDIT2: Thank you guys who replied for trying to help, but i found the solution: there was no problem to begin with. It just so happens that the the two SAMBA clients i used were a scam. Again, thank you guys for helping, after all i would've given up if i didn't receive any replies. I'm just gonna mention everyone who replied to the main thread so they get this. u/byReqz, u/NGL_ItsGood, u/Symbology451, u/omegaaf, u/coppercatter, u/ksobrenatural and the unhelpful u/BrainSweetiesss. By the way, i answered most of the replies, but for some reason my replies aren't appearing. I'll contact the mods after if this doesn't go away.
