Riggs Report: Another California prospect for VP
December 11, 2025 - She was widely perceived as an effective leader, and was honored with the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Award in 2010, along with Darrell Steinberg, Mike Villines, and Dave Cogdill -- the legislative leaders who presided over the fiscal crisis. There’s speculation that Bass may be appealing to Biden, in part, because she hasn’t publicly been maneuvering or campaigning for the VP slot, unlike some other contenders.Details of the vetting process are closely held, but we’re probably still several weeks away from Biden’s decision on a running mate ahead of the August convention in Milwaukee. Bass is part of a list that includes Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Florida Rep. Val Demings, and former Georgia state legislator Stacey Abrams. It’s tough to predict who makes the cut, but Bass’ inclusion in the mix is another surprise in an unpredictable year.Author Kevin Riggs is an Emmy-winning former political reporter for KCRA-TV. How Karen Bass — the other Californian up for VP — is different from her rivals
July 10, 2020 - UNITED STATES - JUNE 10: Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, speaks with reporters as she arrives for the House Judiciary Committee hearing on policing practices and law enforcement accountability on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. Karen Bass is the other Californian on Joe Biden’s short list to be his vice president. She’s rising up the veepstakes charts so fast that even conservative columnist George Will — the Ronald Reagan-cheerleader-turned-never-Trumper — said she’d be a great pick. Like many of the other women on Biden’s short list, Bass, 66, is a ceiling-breaker. The daughter of a postal worker, in 2008 she became the first Black woman in history to lead the California Assembly or any similar legislative body in the country.

August 19, 2020 - But once the media examined Bass’s personal background and long record as State Assemblywoman and then Congresswoman, her stock fell just as rapidly. Despite all of her impressive accomplishments on the most pressing domestic issues of the moment to the American public (COVID-19, race relations, health care, etc) -- equaling or surpassing Harris’s in terms of what Biden sought in his VP-- she possessed just one “liability” that the media fixated on: Her past travels to Cuba, most of them done in the 1970s and 80s before she even entered electoral politics, along with a few positive statements that she made about Fidel Castro while in elected office.

Joe Biden Is Eyeing Karen Bass for Vice President - The Atlantic
July 15, 2020 - Now, much to Bass’s—and pretty much everyone else’s—surprise, Biden’s team is taking her seriously as a potential vice-presidential running mate. One theory is that she’s being vetted to help Biden win favor with the Congressional Black Caucus, which she chairs. Another is that Biden is trying to use the process to elevate as many black women as he can. Yet another is that he’s looking to distract people from speculating about some of the more likely choices. But inside the Biden campaign is another consideration: Over the next month, he’s effectively going to decide whether there will be a competitive Democratic primary in 2024 (or maybe 2028, if he wins and tries to serve until he’s 86 years old). He’s the leader of the party now. Will he decide its future by anointing a successor, or pick someone, like Bass, who’s less likely to run for president? Biden has wanted to be president for almost 40 years.

Bass faces flurry of attacks as Biden’s VP selection enters uncertain final stretch
August 5, 2020 - Biden had no public schedule on Tuesday, an indication that final evaluations had begun from his home in Wilmington, Del. But those seeking to influence the process from the outside still saw time to frame the choices before him, especially since at least two of the apparent finalists, Bass and Susan Rice, didn’t appear on most early lists.
