It's important to understand what the first amendment actually is.

As it stands, it protects your free speech FROM THE GOVERNMENT only, not businesses. As well as the other parts of it, like the right to assembly, freedom of the press, and religion.

The issue is, many Americans think freedom of speech means you can say anything you want, whatsoever, no matter how awful and have no consequences. In the very common example, you say something racist or homophobic publicly or on social media, and a company that employees you doesn't like the negative attention that can bring and potential hit in revenue and fires you over it. Which they legally can do and doesn't violate the first amendment.

Unfortunately, too many people don't even understand their own constitution. Yet love to quote it religiously. Which is why you have so many people saying "What happened to free speech" when the above example happens. And it doesn't help that some parts of the constitution can be ambiguous. In this case, I don't think there is too much ambiguity though. It was always meant to protect its civilians from the government itself and remove as much control from the government as possible.
