I imagine it’s a story of a soldier about to fight in a war after it escalates in the beginning with the arpeggios and the E-flat sections are a last dance with his lover before going off to fight, the E/ A major section is a beautiful town visited before the destination reminding the soldier of the beauty of the world and the scherzo section is the children running around and a storm brewing in the background. The final E-flat section is a memory of the dance with his lover as being better than it was initially, with the coda being the sudden escalation of war appearing before the soldier and the cold ending being that he realizes he’s lost all that’s dear to him.
