Does anyone actually have work-life balance, or is it a myth?
Work life balance? Is there ever truly balance?
"Work Life Balance"- What does that even mean??
What does “work/life balance” mean to you, in the context of your employees?
I keep hearing about “work-life balance,” but honestly, it feels impossible. By the time I finish work, commute, and try to handle personal stuff, the day’s already gone. If anyone here has found a way to actually balance both, how do you do it?
So I've recently started my first full-time job...I'm about a month in and to be completely honest with you, SO FAR...I hate it. It's not so much my job that I hate, it's more so the feeling that I have no time or energy for me anymore. As soon as I wake up, I get ready and go to work and then I get home and am so exhausted from work that I really don't have any energy left to dedicate to myself in any meaningful way. Rather, I use my time doing shit that gives my brain a quick and easy dopamine boost (like scrolling through social media for hours) and next thing I know, it's time for me to go to sleep because I have to sleep at a decent time to wake up and have enough energy to dedicate to yet another day of work. And sure there's the weekend, but shit that's not even long enough to feel like I've truly reenergized myself for another 40-hour work week.
Is this what it is? Is this how life is supposed to be? Maybe it works for some people, but I just know this isn't life for me. It feels like I'm slowly killing myself by succumbing to this way of living that we all seem to be trapped in for the sake of survival.
I'm looking at job postings and see "Work Life Balance" advertiaed as part of the perks. Now I know the definition of this can differ wildly, especially if you factor in Working From Home (WFH)/ Hybrid jobs.
Please explain to me what Work Life Balance means from your own experience as it applied at your place of employment. (Please no perceived ideas of what it might be. I really want to know how it works out in a real job setting). Let me know if this was for a hybrid, a work from home, or a in-office job.
Back story - I currently have a hybrid job. Hard deadline based . High productivity. Salary Exempt. Often find myself working long hours. I don't really see a Work Life Balance even though my employers probably assume I do have work-life balance since I have a hybrid job.
As leaders, when we talk about “work/life balance,” I’m curious what that actually means to you in terms of the culture you’re trying to build for your staff. I know everyone defines this differently, which is why I’m polling the group.
For context: I’m part of a small business (team of 10). I manage everyone except my business partner.
Work/life balance is genuinely important to me, and we’ve tried to build a culture + policies that clearly separate work time from personal time. The expectation is: work time is for work, and personal time is everything outside of work.
Here are some examples of what we do:
• Generous PTO policy based on tenure • All federal market holidays are paid • Mostly in-office, but we allow WFH when needed + offer everyone a WFH day in the summer • Office hours are 8:30am–4:30pm • Everyone (mix of part-time/full-time) gets a paid lunch break (so the workday is effectively 7 hours) • Leadership does NOT communicate with staff outside business hours (no emails/texts/calls) • Work communication stays on work channels only (Teams/email) • Weekly team huddles + bi-monthly department meetings • Quarterly 1:1 check-ins with each employee focused on workload/capacity • Quarterly off-site team building events • Summer Friday hours where everyone gets out early • We accommodate schedule changes for medical/family needs even though we’re not subject to FMLA
And yet, despite all of this, some staff still rated “work/life balance” as NOT being prioritized at our company in our most recent anonymous survey.
I’m trying to understand the disconnect, especially because the same individuals aren’t providing any additional feedback (either anonymously or directly).
For those of you who’ve dealt with this: what might I be missing? How do you define/support work/life balance in your organization, and where could we improve? Thanks in advance.
