Cecil Percival Taylor was born on March 25, 1929 in Long Island City, Queens and was raised in nearby Corona, primarily by his mother, who encouraged an early interest in music and the piano. Taylor studied piano and arranging at the New York College of Music (now New York University’s Steinhardt School) and the New England Conservatory in Boston, matriculating as post-bebop and open form jazz composition emerged.
