Trump admin sends tough private message to oil companies on Venezuela
I am not an expert, but the conventional wisdom in news reporting seems to be that significant ramp-ups in Venezuelan oil production will require gigantic infusions of capital and take many years (maybe even a decade or more) of work. And those things are unlikely to happen without a credible plan for long-term political stability that would allow for investments to be made without the threat of future expropriation again. It sounds like meaningful changes in Venezuelan oil production are not going to happen anytime soon even under the most optimistic projections, and achieving it in the medium-to-long term will require nation-building that is much more successful than anything we pulled off in Afghanistan or Iraq. Some good reporting on this today from BBC and WaPo . More on reddit.com

Trump is playing with economic fire by calling the peace deal with Iran ‘over’ | CNN Business
2 weeks ago - Gas is nearly $4 again and diesel just topped $5. It’s not what you think ... Trump Accounts are now live. Here’s what you need to know ... Something isn't loading properly. Please check back later. ... President Donald Trump during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Wednesday, July 8, 2026. ... Link Copied! ... Three weeks of fragile peace bought President Donald Trump some time and leverage over Iran. But not too much. After Trump signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran on June 18, oil prices tumbled, sinking below pre-war levels by last week. The oil market cheered as the Strait of Hormuz reopened somewhat, and crude started gradually flowing out of the Persian Gulf after getting stuck there for months. Gas prices have been slowly falling back down to Earth, too. But three weeks of a partially reopened strait wasn’t enough time to overcome the biggest oil supply shock the world has ever seen.

Trump's ambitious energy bet could be a winning hand as the world burns more oil, gas than ever
President Donald Trump has made increasing U.S. oil and natural gas production a cornerstone of his economic agenda. (Roberto Schmidt/AFP/Getty Images) GAS SURGE TIED TO IRAN CONFLICT HITS SWING STATES, TESTING TRUMP’S LOW-PRICE PITCH · The findings align with the Trump administration's argument that expanding domestic oil and gas production is critical to lowering energy costs, strengthening U.S. energy security and fueling economic growth ahead of next year's midterm elections, where both parties are expected to make the economy and inflation central campaign issues — but for very different reasons. America's dominant position in global energy markets was on full display in the report — and Trump is taking a victory lap. "Even left-wing studies are finding that President Trump’s energy dominance agenda has been undeniably successful in unleashing reliable, affordable, and secure energy," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital.

Trump accuses big oil firms of price-gouging drivers
3 weeks ago - US President Donald Trump has said he has ordered an investigation into major energy companies, accusing them of "gouging" drivers by not cutting fuel prices after wholesale oil costs fell on global markets. Speaking to reporters in the White House on Wednesday, Trump said "gasoline prices should be much lower at the pump" as he named Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell and BP. His remarks come after wholesale oil prices fell from peaks reached during the US-Israel war with Iran and are now close to levels seen before the conflict started. The American Petroleum Institute (API), which represents the oil and gas industry in the US, said fuel prices "don't move in lockstep with crude oil". The BBC has contacted Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell and BP for comment. "Oil prices have come down so much and we are not seeing anything at the pump by comparison the way they should be," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

As Trump targets alleged price gouging at the pump, his plan flubs a key detail
In recent years, Donald Trump’s position on gas prices has been rather odd. Before returning to the presidency, for example, he took the unusual step of claiming, more than once, that he took steps to deliberately raise gas prices in order to help oil industry profits. Even after his second term began, and prices at the pump climbed, the Republican’s line did not improve. As recently as last month, Trump briefly tried to convince consumers that they should be glad they’re paying more. Early Wednesday morning, however, the president adopted a very different position, writing on his social media platform: The big Oil Companies are not dropping their price at the pump commensurate with the sharply lower prices they are paying for Oil. Those prices are dropping like a rock! In other words, customers are being “gouged.” I have instructed the DOJ to immediately start looking into this.
