You'll own nothing and be happy - Wikipedia
April 10, 2026 - In 2016, Auken published an essay originally titled "Welcome to 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better", later retitled "Here's how life could change in my city by the year 2030", on the WEF's official web site. It described life in an unnamed city in which the narrator does not own a car, a house, any appliances, or any clothes, and instead relies on shared services for all of his daily needs.

May 7, 2022 - I suppose, if there can be any number of universes where the event never happened then that would take care of 'a different number of possible outcomes.' A copy of me could therefore exist or not exist in such universes. If the multiverse is true then perhaps we don't need to worry about: Quoting Eskander · Welcome to the year 2030.

August 6, 2022 - They will swear up and down that Schwab announced that quote (which he never did of course) as a summary of his sinister neo-feudalist communist plot. The article written by a Danish MEP is just a thinkpiece about general results about technological trends. Not a goal or objective ... Interestingly the existence of this article disproves it's a conspiracy; conspirators don't boast about their evil plans.

Welcome to 2030: I own everything, and life’s actually pretty good
August 29, 2023 - Welcome to 2030. Welcome to my city — and yes, it is mine as much as it is everyone else’s. Contrary to the “you’ll own nothing and be happy” prediction propagated via the World Economic Forum, I own things here. I have a stake in cars driving around its streets, electric vehicle chargers, solar panels, a vertical farm.

January 14, 2026 - Surveillance is ubiquitous, as "once in a while I get annoyed about the fact that I have no real privacy," with every movement, purchase, and interaction tracked by data systems to enhance efficiency and prevent crime through predictive analytics.[3] Socially, the essay portrays a divided yet harmonious world: urban dwellers embrace the interconnected, shared model for its convenience and sustainability, while a minority opts for rural, self-sufficient communities rejecting the system. Unemployment from automation is reframed as leisure, with universal access to education and experiences fostering fulfillment over material accumulation. Auken presents this scenario optimistically, claiming "life has never been better" due to greater equality, health, and time for relationships, though acknowledging occasional unease among those valuing privacy or autonomy.

August 15, 2023 - Since 2016, the WEF has been calling for this catalyst event to no avail. ... You can be separated from you property under capitalism too - the system can be set so that you will never have enough to cover your needs (medical bills, rent, education for children...). If you have a string of bad luck you fall into debt - and by then all you possessions can be taken away. Now I do not think that this makes capitalism a bad system, it is the best system we have.

I was discussing the state of the world with a friend and remembered that the World Economic Forum predicted that by 2030, we will own nothing and be happy about it. How realistic is this prediction, and what would that scenario look like? Also, why do they believe we will be happy owning nothing?

The idea was that people would avoid large purchases in favor of renting whatever they want when they need it. Note that this was not a prediction by the forum, it was a fictional speech given at the Forum by one person trying to make a point.
