One million physicists - Physics Today
October 10, 2025 - Most countries have a national physics society, but not all of those websites have English-language versions and not all of them list the total number of members. Still, it was conceivable, I thought, that the proportion of physicists who belong to their national physics society would be more or less constant across countries with the same level of economic development.

Don’t get a PhD because you are dead set on becoming a professor. Get a PhD because you enjoy your field and enjoy research and then see where it leads you. I’m a recent PhD and most of my classmates are happily employed as industry scientists / engineers, some are post docs, and two or three are tenure track. If you are someone who really wants a very safe and unchanging plan about what exactly your career path will be 5 or 10 years down the line, don’t choose a PhD!!

I read something that said like only 10% of phD students in their respective fields go on to teach at a university.
