May 7, 2024Red Rock Canyon Trail Head Recommendations
OK, so here's the thing. I'm assuming you have a car for this. If you get the car entry permit and drive the scenic loop to go to a hike, you have to take into account that you have to drive the entire loop, which takes almost half an hour if you're going the speed limit, and you'll want to because the views are really spectacular. So, doing any trail on the scenic drive is a 30 minute drive to the entry, 30 minute drive back, and almost 30 minutes driving around the loop. If you're cool with this, I'd say hike the Calico Tanks Trail which you access from the Sandstone Quarry parking lot: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/nevada/calico-tanks-trail BUT, if you want to maximize hiking time, park at Red Springs which avoids the scenic loop (and you don't have to get the entry permit so it's less fuss) and you can do a few slightly longer hikes. From Red Springs I'd recommend either Guardian Angel Pass or Kraft Mountain Loop: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/nevada/kraft-mountain-loop https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/nevada/guardian-angel-pass You could summit Kraft Mountain, which is super fun if you're into more class 3 and 4 scrambling. August 7, 2020What are the "must do" Hiking Trails at Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire?
I hope you don't plan on doing it all in 1 day. How difficult you looking for? Turtle Head Peak at Red Rock has some great views at the top, but it's not an easy hike. As far as Valley of Fire, White Domes Trail is cool, it's got a slot canyon and an old movie set. There's also a few trails with petroglyphs at both locations. November 26, 2025 - The Calico Tanks Trail is a blast and the view over Las Vegas is icing on the cake. We highly recommend this hike. This trail is moderately strenuous with short sections of rock scrambling. We saw people of all ages on this trail, from Moms carrying toddlers in baby carriers, 5 year olds scrambling up and over boulders, and hikers in their 70’s. By now it was early afternoon. We visited Red Rock Canyon on a late December day between Christmas and New Years Eve, and it was really getting busy.

You have to do some scrambling and climbing, but that is what makes this trail so much fun! I saw many people of all ages on this trail. Some people took their time, and others climbed quickly. Since the views were so spectacular, we took our time and took many photos with the red rocks. Eventually, the trail ends at the viewpoint, as seen below. A little bit of scrambling and climbing helped us get the best views of Las Vegas Valley.
