Not sure if it just sounds wrong to my ear from how I learned English but I’ve been seeing the posts for Easter and was confused on how this phrase came to be

In this context, risen isn't an activity, it's a state of being. It isn't like saying, he has gone to the store. It's more like, he is holy.

Verbs like “rise”, “fall” and others are called unaccusatives — their subject is not an active agent. In the past, English used be-auxiliary for them: “he is risen”, “they are fallen etc. This changed and English only uses have-auxiliaries today, but in German for example this distinction is still maintained.

Every Easter they say he is risen instead of he has risen. Everything I can find about it says that risen can be used as an adjective but it’s almost only ever used as an adjective in this specific terminology. I’m looking for the history of why a verb was given adjective properties in seemingly only a religious sense.

You could interpret this a couple of ways. It could be is + an adjective, the same risen as "the risen Christ." It could also be an archaic use of is as a helping verb, which used to be common in English. You probably know it from some quotes or set phrases, like "I am become death." He is risen = He has risen. I tend to think it was originally intended as a perfect verb because it's a verb in the Greek and Latin, but I'm guessing most English speakers don't parse it that way these days. My hunch is that risen is common as an adjective in specifically a Christian/Easter context is that it was reanalyzed as an adjective in that context fairly early and has a long history of being used that way in liturgy.

i am genuinely curious, and not trying to sound disrespectful. do Christians believe that Jesus comes back to life every year on Easter? why do you say “he is risen” if you don’t believe he has yet been resurrected? does it have a secondary meaning that i just don’t understand? again, i mean no disrespect this is just coming from a non-Christian who is curious. We don’t say it like it just happened this morning. It happened 2000 years ago, but it’s as true today as it was then. He is still risen. He is still alive. It’s also a reference to the words in the Bible. What the angel told the women at the empty tomb. He is risen. Then the women went and told the disciples, he is risen. Then the disciples told others, he is risen. Then they told the world, he is risen. And we are still proclaiming that good news to this day. He is risen.

We do believe that Jesus has been resurrected. He was crucified, died and was buried. On the third day he rose again. So, we do believe that Christ has already been resurrected. His return we await is a return to earth from Heaven, not death. Further, many Christians, to a greater or lesser extent, follow a religious calendar that repeats yearly (much like every calendar…). We celebrate Good Friday as a reminder/reenactment of Jesus’ crucifixion, leading to us again saying “he is risen” on Easter Sunday. It may seem repetitive but it is a way of reminding and reliving the event for ourselves and having a time of the year set aside to meditate on the event.

April 16, 2014 - The other two answers are great here, but there is another possibility. Perhaps they mean 'risen' as describing jesus, rather than saying what he did, ie an adjective instead of a verb. The same way some would call zombies the risen dead.
