Hi, my husband is looking to get us relocated to rapid city. I looked online and I see that the crime rate is pretty high, with the focus being in the rape/sex crimes dept. being nearly double the national average. can someone explain to me why on earth that is the case? It’s a terrifying thought as we will be moving with my daughter as well. Just makes me incredibly nervous.
Also, are there parts of town one might want to stay away from in regards to home buying? I know every town has a little area that maybe has some less than great tenants so just hoping to know where to stay away from and/or where one might like to buy.

I have never felt unsafe in Rapid City. I have walked downtown at night alone and never felt creeped out. The crime doesn’t seem to be random. It seems to be between people who know each other.

Before you buy/rent, talk to your neighbors. Odds are they will be the people you will have problems with, if you have problems. Random crime isn’t that prevalent here.

The North Side of Rapid City is an economically distressed community with large segments of the neighborhood that are Federally Designated Qualified Opportunity Zones (FDQOZ). Three specific FDQOZ areas could benefit from collaborative policing strategies to deter the initiation and occurrence of criminal activity. These areas include the majority of extended stay motels and at-risk housing complexes known for the highest rates of violent crime victimization in the neighborhood.
