Have We Misunderstood Paul on Homosexuality? - Wes Bredenhof
July 21, 2023 - (2) Paul vehemently denounces homosexual acts and declares they arise from out-of-control lust. This does not mean he only oppose the out-of-control part and would accept homosexual acts that are ordered and natural.

Paul and Homosexuality.
Paul says absolutely nothing about homosexuality. Homosexuality did not exist in Paul’s time. Sex with males did exist but it was not a sexual identity. It was an option open to every man. Quoting from God and the Gay Christian: A male athlete is praised for being so determined to win that “he never touched a woman, nor a boy either, in the whole period when he was in the peak of his training” - Plato, Laws, 840a A third century BCE epigram speaks of a man’s interest in both sexes without any hint of surprise: “Kallignotos swore to Ionis that no one, man or woman, would ever be dearer to him that she… But now he is heated by male fire, and the poor girl… isn’t in the picture anymore” - Kallimakhos 11, The Greek Anthology A spurned woman in the third century BCE poem who hopes to woo back her lover says: “Whether a woman lies beside him, or a man, may he be… forgetful of them” - Theokritos 2.44-45 A 92 BCE marriage contract from Egypt: “It shall not be lawful for [the husband] to bring home another wife in addition to [the woman he is marrying] or to have a concubine or boy lover So as we see same sex acts did exist in antiquity and were talked about. Not as a sexuality but as a sex act open to every man. ”the passion for boys and for women derives from one and the same love” - Plutarch The Dialogue on Love Same sex behavior was often seen as an act of excess lust, not as a exclusive identity. Was the apostle Paul gay? TLDR: its complicated.
I think both of the arguments for him being gay is stupid. Being unworthy is him simply say there is sin in his life. Such as how he use to be a bounty hunter for Christians. I can't give a proper informed argument on the second point. But places like ancient Greece had lots of homosexuality. More on reddit.com

Your mom believes the King James text is the most accurate? The same King James text that was created specifically so a king could get out of his marriage and then had to be quickly rewritten because some of the passages were seen as a threat to the entrenched class power of the Clergy? Yeah sure, totally the most accurate translation that is completely devoid of human interference. More on reddit.com

November 9, 2018 - The same is true with a susceptibility to homosexuality. No matter our proclivities or attractions, we cannot continue to define ourselves by the very sins that crucified Jesus—and at the same time assume we are right with God. Paul lists many of the sins that the Corinthians once practiced (homosexuality is on the list).

March 24, 2026 - Although Christians of several denominations have historically maintained that this verse is a complete prohibition of all forms of homosexual activity, some 20th- and 21st-century authors contend the passage is not a blanket condemnation of homosexual acts, suggesting, among other interpretations, that the passage condemned heterosexuals who experimented with homosexual activity or that Paul's condemnation was relative to his own culture, in which homosexuality was not understood as an orientation and in which being penetrated was seen as shameful.

August 1, 2022 -

I know this is a controversial question but I can’t find much information.

Was Paul homosexual? I was speaking to someone who said in a lecture he heard a historian talk about a few things but forgot the name(great….)

There are a few things that stand out that make me think he was gay or atleast bi.

You have Paul choosing to travel with young men instead of a wife like other apostles. He’s talks about a thorn he can’t get rid of and modern days studies show that Paul’s rhetoric towards homosexuality lines up with how repressed gay men act towards homosexuals.

I was also told that in history there were people that would launch gay slurs at Paul. (Once again no source lol)

Are there any scholars or does anyone have any answer they can provide to if Paul may have been a repressed gay man? I know we will never but I was wondering if there was anyone out there who talks about this or if anyone has any insight’s.

The late Bishop John S. Spong makes the case that Paul is gay in his book Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism. You can view a 1991 NY Times article about Spong's claims here . One irony is that one critic of Spong's idea was Cardinal Theodore McCarrick (!), who was himself a closeted gay man .
