r/TrueChristian on Reddit: Regarding the rapture
May 30, 2024 -
I’ve been raised my whole life that it is. But I just saw an article that it was invented in the 1800s by some guy named John Nelson Darby. Is that true? What does that mean for us? Like we have to live the whole 7 years of the tribulation? Like we have to go thru all those bad things? Seriously?

There are several things in your post that need to be untangled. I'll address each of these one at a time: I just saw an article that it was invented in the 1800s by some guy named John Nelson Darby. Is that true? This is not true. John Nelson Darby popularized the doctrine of the pre-Tribulation rapture (which should not be confused with the doctrine of the rapture as a whole) in the 1800's but he did not invent this doctrine. There are church fathers who taught this, most notably Ephrem the Syrian (306 – 373 AD). But first, I should go over the different schools of thought concerning the rapture. Here's what Ephrem wrote: St. Ephraim Syrian on Antichrist, section: Concerning the Coming of the Lord, the End of the World, and the Coming of the Antichrist For all the saints and elect of God are gathered, prior to the tribulation that is to come, and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins. There's nearly half a dozen other quotes of his from his various writings showing that he believed in a pre-Tribulation rapture. The doctrine of the rapture is the doctrine that Jesus will send out angels to gather up the saints at his second coming. This doctrine is right in the Bible, and any one who says this is not in the Bible is demonstrably incorrect. It is plainly stated in Matthew 24:29-31 , and by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 . The term "rapture" isn't used; that is later terminology, but just as the term "trinity" isn't used in the Bible, but describes a doctrine that is derived from scripture, the term "rapture" describes a doctrine that is derived from scripture. However, there are several schools of thought concerning the relative timing of the rapture with regards to the Great Tribulation (which Jesus speaks about in Matthew 24:15-22 and which John refers to using the term "Great Tribulation" in Revelation 7:13-14 . These are the major schools of thought under the pre-millennial eschatology (eschatology is the study of the end times; pre-millennialism believes that the Millennium mentioned in Revelation 20 is an actual period of time where Jesus literally reigns on earth with resurrected Christians. The other schools of thought are amillenialism, which says there is no literal millennium and that the millennium is symbolic, and post-millennialism, which makes no sense to me and which I don't know well enough to summarize.): pre-Tribulation rapture mid-Tribulation rapture post-Tribulation rapture post-Tribulation pre-wrath rapture (a variant of post-Tribulation rapture) Darby didn't invent the doctrine of the rapture, nor even the pre-Trib rapture. He only popularized the pre-Trib rapture in the 1800's. A lot of other church fathers also wrote about the Tribulation, though they tend to teach a post-Tribulation rapture, or a post-Trib pre-Wrath (as in the seven bowls of God's wrath) rapture. (Victorinus of Petrovium, who died in 304 AD, taught this view).

Did John Nelson Darby invent the rapture
Being caught up in the joy of welcoming Christ when he returns? No, it is biblical and 2000 years old. Flying to heaven to leave everyone else behind? Yes, it is 19th century nonsense. More on reddit.com
Is it true the rapture was made up by a cult as a theory 100+ years ago (I'm a Christian)
Are you talking about the Dispensationalists? I'm not sure they fit the definition of a cult but, yeah, they pretty much made it up. More on reddit.com

Rapture Doctrine invented by John Darby in 1830 AD
The only doctrine more recent is the invention of the sinner's prayer for salvation by Billy Sunday in 1930, which was made popular by Billy Graham in 1935. 2. The fact that John Nelson Darby invented the pre-tribulation rapture doctrine around 1830 AD is unquestionably true.

The Rapture: A Pre-Darby Rapture
Neither did Darby. The article title is not suggesting that the Rapture occurred before the days of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882), but rather is pointing out that a belief in the Rapture of the Church (in particular, a pre-tribulation Rapture) existed and was taught before Darby’s birth.

Who was John Nelson Darby? | GotQuestions.org
January 4, 2022 - Darby’s division of history wasn’t a radical theological change. What made his theological perspective significant in church history is the strict literalism in which he interpreted Scripture, the separation of Israel and the church, and seeing the rapture and second coming as two distinct future events. John Darby’s views on church membership and eschatology, combined with Darby’s inflexible position on such matters, eventually split the Brethren Church.

How come they believe in that false doctrine known as 'Rapture' that was made by John Nelson Darby and not in the Bible? - Quora
Answer (1 of 10): I think it’s a classic case of escapism. Who wants to go through a time of persecution for one’s beliefs? Darbyism enabled his followers to believe both in a last-days time of persecution AND that it would happen to someone else because they’d be “outta here”. Plus ...

Is the Rapture Biblical? - by Jeff Poor
March 3, 2026 - For roughly the first eighteen hundred years of Christianity, there’s no clear evidence that the Church believed in a pre-tribulation rapture. That doesn’t mean early Christians agreed on every detail about the end times. They didn’t. There were real differences and ongoing debates. But this specific framework, the idea that Christians would be quietly removed from the world before a period of suffering, just wasn’t there. That changes in the nineteenth century. A British Bible teacher named John Nelson Darby began developing a theological system that later became known as dispensationalism.
