Why didn’t the Prophet teach the meditation techniques he used in the cave that led to Gabriel’s appearance? The meditation did not lead to the appearance of Gabriel (pbuh). Nor did the angel decide to appear. Angels only do what God commands them to do. You cannot summon angels by meditation. If the belief is in One God, who exactly is this angel Gabriel? Angels are beings that are created by God. They don't have free will. They don't procreate. There are many more angels than humans. Why did the Prophet rely on a messenger instead of hearing directly from God? Why did he trust words spoken by someone else rather than hearing from God Himself? The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has no say in it. God alone decides to whom He will talk to directly and to whom through an angel. However, the prophet (pbuh) did also talk to God directly in the Mi'raj. Isn’t that somewhat similar to listening to a priest’s words... No. Why would the prophet (pbuh) listen to priests if he had been given direct knowledge from God? ... or praying to an idol? Muhammad (pbuh) did not pray to Gabriel. Why didn’t anyone question this at the time? Lots of people questioned it. Not everyone converted to Islam right away. Also, if this angel Gabriel is the same one who appeared to Mary and told her she would have a divine child (Jesus) 600 years before Muhammad, why did the same Gabriel tell Muhammad that Jesus was just another prophet? ... This is not true. Gabriel did not say that Jesus will be divine. Why did Muhammad say that he is the last prophet and that the Quran is the last book? Because God revealed it to him. Did he do this deliberately so no one could replace him? No. He did it because it was true. Why would any God say, “You are the last prophet”? God does whatever He wills. It was God's plan to test humans for a period of time on earth. And it was His plan to send prophets to guide people. So, somebody has to be the final prophet. Answer from Foobarinho on reddit.com

r/islam on Reddit: Holy Spirit and Angel Gabriel
October 24, 2023 -

Hi, I am reading the Quran for the first time, and it is the second time already that there is a passage about the Holy Spirit and soon after a foot note: i.e., the angel Gabriel. I am reading on the Internet, and I am giving preference to Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran, version.

My question is: what is the relation between the angel Gabriel and the Holy Spirit? I asked ChatGPT and it said it has no relation, but it is the second time I have seen this.

I am at Surah 5:110.

Thank you

Gabriel is Not the Holy Spirit – Wake Up! Wake Up!
February 26, 2015 - He claimed: Jesus was not divine. Allah was not the Father of Jesus, although Mary was a virgin. The birth was enabled by Allah, but there was no conjugal visit. Muhammad was forecast in the Bible as the Comforter that would follow Jesus. Father, Son and Holy Spirit equals polytheism. “They crucified Him (Jesus) not; They killed Him not – as revealed in the Quran. ... What was new was: Gabriel was the Holy Spirit.

Is Gabriel really the Holy Spirit?
This is a brief reply to Muslim apologist Joseph Islam who wrote an article seeking to prove that the Quran teaches that Gabriel is the same as the Holy Spirit, “Is Gabriel (Jibril) an Angel?”. One of the ways he tries to establish his point is by appealing to texts such as Q. 2:97, 16:102 and 26:193, which say that the Spirit and Gabriel brought down the Quran to Muhammad. He then reasons from this fact that these entities must be the same since the Quran assumes that there was only one supposed divine agent of revelation.

r/religion on Reddit: Curious about the Role of Angel Gabriel in Islam
May 12, 2025 -

While I was studying Islam and Christianity, I came across few questions. I don’t to whom should I ask? Below are the questions. My sincere apologies, If this hurts anyone feelings, as these are my genuine questions to understand better.

“————— While the Prophet was meditating in the cave, the angel Gabriel (Jibril) is said to have commanded him to “Iqra” (Read/Recite), which eventually became the Quran.

But I’ve always wondered: • Why didn’t the Prophet teach the meditation techniques he used in the cave that led to Gabriel’s appearance? Wouldn’t that have helped others witness at least another messenger or even the angel Gabriel? • If the belief is in One God, who exactly is this angel Gabriel? Why did the Prophet rely on a messenger instead of hearing directly from God? • Why did he trust words spoken by someone else rather than hearing from God Himself? Isn’t that somewhat similar to listening to a priest’s words or praying to an idol? • Why didn’t anyone question this at the time? • Also, if this angel Gabriel is the same one who appeared to Mary and told her she would have a divine child (Jesus) 600 years before Muhammad, why did the same Gabriel tell Muhammad that Jesus was just another prophet? Why do Gabriel’s statements seem to contradict each other? • Why did Gabriel tell Mary that Jesus was divine, but not deliver the same kind of message to other prophets? • Why did Muhammad say that he is the last prophet and that the Quran is the last book? Why did he close the door to future prophets or revelations? • Did he do this deliberately so no one could replace him? Why would any God say, “You are the last prophet”?

I’m genuinely curious about how others see these questions.”

Thank you 🙏

Good questions. – What the Prophet (sa.) would do wasn't "meditate", per se. It was actual worship of God. And it wasn't what led to revelation. He did it for years. God is the one who chooses when and how to reveal his message. – Angels are under God's commands. They don't come to ordinary people, no matter what they do. – Gabriel, like Michael and billions others, are angels of God. They are creations, tasked with different tasks in the universe. – There is no "hearing directly" from God. God isn't a creation that has a mouth or a sound. As Quran states: It is not ˹possible˺ for a human being to have Allah communicate with them, except through inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger to reveal whatever He wills by His permission. He is surely Most High, All-Wise. [42:51] – Gabriel didn't tell Mary (sa.) she would have a "divine" son. This is what he said: He said, “I am only a messenger from your Lord, ˹sent˺ to bless you with a pure son.” She said: "How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?" He replied, “So will it be! Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me. And so will We make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us.’ It is a matter ˹already˺ decreed.” [Maryam, 19-21] – Muhammad (sa.) never said anything of his own accord. God says he is the messenger and Quran is the final book. And God didn't say "You are the last prophet". He says: Muḥammad is not the father of any of your men, but is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. And Allah has full knowledge of all things. [33:40] I hope these help.

The Angel Gabriel – Allah’s Other Divine Partner
Hence, this not only shows that Gabriel is one of the divine speakers of the Quran but that he is also god in the same sense that Allah is! However, Muslims deny that Gabriel is god or that the plural pronouns include him. This, therefore, shows that the Muslim expositors are again guilty of attributing divinity to a creature, thereby turning a created spirit being into a co-equal partner with Allah. What all of this demonstrates is that Islam also has a trinity of its own, namely a triad consisting of Allah, Muhammad and the angel Gabriel; and let no Muslim dare tell you otherwise!

Angel Gabriel: Between Christianity and Islam | About Islam
April 10, 2023 - If Muslim scholars have described Jibreel as the spirit of God, they have not intended this to mean that he was the third person in a Trinity – the Holy Spirit. Muslims believe that Jibreel is an angel. Nowhere will you find Jibreel trying to confuse himself with God or trying to deceive others that he is God. The central belief of Islam, revealed by Jibreel in the Quran in Surat A-Ikhlas, reads as follows:

July 11, 2025 - Muhammad had a little knowledge about Tanakh and the New Testament books the reason he erred in identifying Holy Spirit as Angel Gabriel. The Jews caught the ignorance of Muhammad about the spirit when they asked him about it, his answer was, “only Allah has the knowledge of the Spirit” (Q17:85). Catholicism, the religion founded by Jesus, defines the word “holy” as pure, perfect, or sinless.

September 19, 2023 - For the same reason, it is even less conceivable that Muhammad would have received the Quran in “his heart” if the “Holy Spirit” were to be divine, or that Jesus would have been strengthened by a divine entity: ﴾2:97﴿ Say, “Anyone who opposes Gabriel should know that he has brought down this (the Quran) into your heart (Muhammad’s heart), in accordance with God’s will, confirming previous scriptures, and providing guidance and good news for the believers.”

Who is Gabriel according to the Quran?
Just like Allah, the righteous believers and angels are all different and distinct from one another, they don’t belong to the same class of being, Gabriel must also be viewed as a distinct entity from all the rest. Surah 2:97-98 also lists several different groups giving the impression that these entities are also different from one another. The fact that angels and messengers are distinguished from each other shows that, at least in this specific context, the messengers are not angelic beings; they may be the human agents that Allah sent to mankind, i.e. Moses, Jesus etc., or even the messengers from the jinn.

Ibn Barrajan regards Gabriel to be an angel created from fire, like Iblis, thus settling Gabriel symbolically into the head of opposition to the leader of the devils. Other Islamic texts and some apocryphal literature also supported Gabriel's role as a celestial warrior. Though alternate theories exist, whether the occurrence of the Holy Spirit in the Quran refers to Gabriel or not, remains an issue of scholarly debate.
