I'd say 4ft is a bare minimum for me. There are probably more experienced growers that can get by with less space though. With most grows, I run out of vertical space in my 2ft x 2ft x 4ft tent. The light hangs down a bit and needs some clearance from the top of the tent to stay cool. I'm also using the DWC hydroponic method with a 5-gallon bucket so that eats into my vertical space too.
