Possibly moving from Houston to Buffalo. What should I know?

Congrats on your move! I’m born and raised in Rochester, but have lived and worked in Buffalo for the last 13 years. I maintain homes in both cities.

The worst parts about both places are the winters and taxes. I’ve only been to Texas once, but one difference that struck me is how GREEN everything is here. Our heat and humidity is less intense and for a shorter timeframe, and since we have four seasons, we have some beautiful nature and outdoor spaces. The Olmsted Park System is one of the best out there, very well maintained and thoughtfully designed.

Did you decide on Buffalo for work? Areas I’d recommend would be based on where you’re working, Traffic will be less intense than Houston though. Most people live in the suburbs, but if you’re looking to live in the city, the Elmwood area and North Buffalo area offer the most in terms of walkability, shopping, restaurants, and are well maintained and relatively safe.

The city is dividing line between the “north towns” and “south towns”. Each area has different things to offer, but you’ll find people don’t cross over between the two very often. North towns are generally more commercialized, closer to Niagara Falls and Lake Ontario. Niagara Falls and it’s suburbs are in Niagara County which is the northern most region, about 35 minutes from Buffalo proper. I live in Wheatfield which is an up and coming area between Niagara Falls and Buffalo. I commute to Buffalo for work every day. Other North town areas Id live in would be Tonawanda, Amherst, Williamsville, or Clarence. Clarence and East Amherst have money, so you’ll find larger and nicer homes there. You’ll probably find cost of living to be cheaper than Houston too.

South towns get more snow and are closer to Lake Erie. The Buffalo Bills stadium is in Orchard Park, which is south. I’m not too familiar with this area, but know OP is one of the nicer areas there, and Hamburg has a lot to offer too.

Honestly, I’m not sure what constitutes Tex-Mex. That might be an indication of the popularity of Mexican food here - LOL! Two authentic Mexican places that I like and people seem to enjoy are La Galera in Niagara Falls and La Tolteca in Williamsville. There are others like La Divina, Don Tequila, Deep South, etc but I cant speak to them.

Feel free to ask any questions - best of luck on your move!

What's your highest score on Buffalo vs Houston (Exhibition)? Has anyone scored 100+?

I mention Buffalo and Houston because they are the best and worst teams in exhibition mode. Buffalo has the most stars along with Philadelphia (10) and Houston has the fewest (3).
